Self-care Healthcare
A phrase I use to describe my work is self-care healthcare. So what does that mean? Let’s start with what it doesn’t mean. It does NOT mean that I’m against traditional healthcare or that we can solve all of our healthcare woes on our own.
Modern medicine has a place and has evolved to be very good at dealing with acute injuries or diseases, accidents, and other physical traumas. Modern medicine relies heavily on chemical interventions, i.e. pills, injections, etc, and there is a great role for that type of intervention. But modern medicine has a bit of a crisis as chronic conditions are becoming more prevalent for a variety of reasons, mainly because these are multi-system diseases or issues that require a different approach than just throwing a whole bunch of chemicals into someone’s regime. And there is a bit of a crisis with healthcare offering free interventions like breathing, going for a walk, listening to a good song and dancing, or prescribing specific movements instead of specific pills.
You’ve probably heard the saying, “if exercise was a pill it would be the most prescribed drug available.” Well that is part of self-care healthcare. No one can exercise you for you, you must be an active participant in your own health. We have the power unlock an amazing pharmacy within through a variety of self-care interventions. And I believe that the more you learn about the wonder that your body is, the easier it will be for you to take care of this amazing body in this one precious life.
So what IS self-care healthcare? It’s experiential, it takes consistency, it’s process based (meaning there is never a time that you have achieved the goal of health and you can be done; it’s life long and ever evolving), it is individualized based on your needs and meets you where you are, it is compassionate and empowering. So again, what does this all mean? It means I will help teach you about your own anatomy that is unique to you, but also common to all of us. It starts with breathing, body awareness, embodiment, settling, acceptance, non-judgement, curiosity. It involves teamwork and collaboration because no one knows what you need more than you. No one feels your body like you. No one has lived your life but you. But sometimes it’s hard to translate body speak (that so often gets louder and louder as pain) so that’s where I can help guide and offer and help you experiment with what resonates slowly and safely.
And, to be clear, I cannot promise to help you heal everything, but I can offer a little more empowerment, a little more confidence in meeting and talking about your body in terms your healthcare providers will understand and respect, and a little more detail about what the traditional cookie-cutter PT exercises or movements you learned 20+ years ago might need to be updated. And none of this is about you being a failure, your body being a problem, or something that you just can’t do.
